VDOT releases I-73 Henry County alternative route study

Last week, the Virginia Department of Transportation released a preliminary impact study on an alternate route for Interstate 73 through Henry County. The route, which moves I-73 closer to Martinsville, was suggested to VDOT by the Henry County Board of Supervisors nearly two years ago.

The board suggested the route for quicker and closer access to the Patriot Centre at Beaver Creek, Martinsville industrial parks, and Martinsville Speedway.

The alternate route would consist of eight Martinsville area exits compared to six interchanges on the preferred alternative. The preferred alternative was approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in 2004.

The alternate plans would add 1.8 miles to the route and cost more. A result of the added length and additional interchanges. Though no current businesses would be impacted by the suggested alternative; it does impact more residences. And while the HCBoS route has less impact to wetlands and stream crossings; it has greater environmental impacts on local flood plains.

The alternate plan's next steps - the CTB has to see if the alternate routing is worth studying further. And with legal issues on the overall routing of I-73 still yet to be resolved, it may be closer to a year until the CTB takes this option into consideration.

The story of the Boy Scout Ramps on Interstate 79 North in NW Pennsylvania

If you are traveling on Interstate 79 North of Pittsburgh, you may notice the remnants of a set of off and on ramps at mile 100 just north of Exit 99 (US 422).  There's a story behind these ramps.  Forty years ago, these ramps were built specifically for two Boy Scout Jamboree's that were held at Moraine State Park - 1973 and 1977.  The ramps purpose were to provide access to the north shore of Lake Arthur where the bulk of the festivities and campsite for the Jamboree were located.  (Lawrence County Memories has a great write up and map of the festivities on its site.)

Not long after the Jamboree ended the ramps were abandoned.  There are still remnants of the Boy Scout Ramps today.

2017 sees new interest and new promise for the Pike2Bike Trail

There's new energy in the campaign to convert the 8.5 mile stretch of the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike into a multi-use bike trail.  These recent developments has spurned renewed interest in the project with local governments, businesses and the Governor's office in Harrisburg.

In a reply to my recent blog entry on the seemingly stagnant efforts to convert the 8.5 miles of abandoned turnpike to a bike trail, Bedford County Planning Director, Donald Schwartz, shared with me some new and updated information on the status of the plan.  Earlier this year, the engineering firm, Navarro & Wright, was awarded the bid to update the master plan.  Once the work is completed and the plan is revised; the still unresolved issue of ownership of the trail remains.  Schwartz sees that it is still likely that a joint operation between Fulton and Bedford Counties will be overseeing the trail.

2017 Midwest Vacation - St. Louis Roads and Busch Stadium

During our two days in St. Louis, much of our driving would take placeon Missouri Route 364, Interstate 270, 170, 64 and Page Avenue (County Route D).    For photos from the road in St. Louis, head here on flickr.

Missouri 364:

Maggie's cousins live off of Missouri 364 so we were on this road the most.  Though, our exposure was of the highway from Harvester Road east to Interstate 270, I was impressed at what I saw of the route.
From what I saw, Missouri 364 certainly appears to be Interstate standard, and there seems to be some inclination that it will or can become Interstate 364 whenever MODOT petitions for it.  The MO 364 freeway was built over three phases from the early-2000s to 2014.  The route runs just over 21 miles from Interstate 64 in Lake St. Louis to Interstate 270 in Maryland Heights. East of I-270, it continues as Page Avenue.
